$100M → $2.5B
Annualized ad revenue → 2026 target
OpenAI Hit $100M Annualized Ad Revenue. The 2026 Target Is $2.5B.
900 million weekly ChatGPT users as of June 2026 — up from 400M in February 2025. Roughly $100M in annualized ad revenue in the first months of monetization. OpenAI’s internal targets: $2.5B in 2026, $11B in 2027, $25B by 2029 (about 20% of total revenue).
For scale: Google search ads do ~$200B globally. ChatGPT isn’t replacing Google — it’s adding a meaningfully sized channel in 18 months that didn’t exist 18 months ago.

~855M
Weekly free-tier users who see ads
It’s Not Paid Search. It’s Paid Recommendation.
The format is a labeled sponsored card below ChatGPT’s answer — never inside the answer itself. Logo, headline, body copy, click-through.
Critically, targeting is contextual, not keyword-based: a homeowner who describes “my AC keeps tripping the breaker every afternoon” can match your ad without ever typing “AC repair.” It’s a different intent moment than Google. ChatGPT catches the homeowner describing the problem. Google catches them ready to hire.
Who sees them. Free and Go tier users only — Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education stay ad-free. That’s still roughly 95% of ChatGPT’s 900M weekly active users, about 855M people on the ad-supported side. Paid users individually engage 4.2x more per week, but the free tier is where the volume lives.

Anatomy of a ChatGPT Sponsored Card
A breaker that trips when your AC runs typically points to one of three issues: a dirty condenser coil drawing too much current, a failing capacitor, or a refrigerant leak forcing the system to overwork. The most common cause in summer is condenser coil buildup — dust insulates the coil, the system can’t shed heat, and the compressor pulls excess amps until the breaker pops...

$3 – $5
ChatGPT CPC — vs $9–$80+ on Google
$3–$5 Per Click. 3–10x Cheaper Than Home Services Google CPC.
ChatGPT CPC runs $3–$5 (bids under $3 fail to deliver impressions). CPM $25–$60. Home services Google CPC sits structurally higher across every trade and keyword class:
| Platform | Per-click |
|---|---|
| ChatGPT Ads | $3–$5 |
| Google Ads — HVAC (non-branded) | ~$9 |
| Google Ads — roofing (non-branded) | ~$10 |
| Google Ads — emergency keywords | $25–$80+ |
There’s no minimum spend on self-serve, and you don’t need a paid ChatGPT subscription to advertise — anyone can create an ads account at ads.openai.com with a free OpenAI login. A budget already running $20K/mo on Google can absorb a $1,500–$3,000/mo ChatGPT test without breaking anything else.

You can DIY at ads.openai.com with a free OpenAI login — but if you want it wired correctly the first time (Conversions API, the right geo splits, the right contextual targets), we’ll set it up. We’ve been running ChatGPT Ads in beta for clients since May. We know what works and what burns budget.

~2x
AI conversion lift in home & garden
AI-Referred Conversion Rates Are Approaching 2x Google.
First Page Sage’s 2026 conversion rate report and OpenAI’s own advertiser data both show a 1.5–2x conversion rate lift on AI-referred clicks vs Google Shopping in home & garden categories — up from 1.5x in March.
Volume is still smaller. But the metric home services dashboards actually care about — cost per booked job, not cost per click — favors the channel with the higher click-to-conversion ratio.

1.2%
Local businesses ChatGPT picks organically
ChatGPT Recommends 1.2% of Local Businesses. Ads Are the Door In.
For every 100 contractors in your service area, ChatGPT picks roughly one for any given query. Building organic AI visibility takes 12+ months — review velocity, NAP consistency, content authority, citation cleanup. (We broke down how buyers now find you in Issue #008.)
Sponsored placement is the immediate workaround. The aggregators already saw it: Angi launched a ChatGPT marketplace integration March 4. Thumbtack followed.

100 contractors in your service area. ChatGPT recommends one. The other 99 don’t exist in the conversation. Sponsored placement is the only fast way in.

Do This This Week
- ☐Open ChatGPT. Search “best [your trade] in [your city].” Screenshot what appears in the sponsored slot. That’s your competitive baseline for this channel.
- ☐If you want to test in Q3, calendar a 30-minute scoping conversation with your marketing team or agency this week. The early-mover cost advantage shrinks every quarter.
- ☐If testing: budget $1,500–$3,000/mo, set ZIP-level targeting on your top 3 service areas, and wire client-side conversion tracking through Google Tag Manager before you launch anything.
