What is the Google map pack?
When someone searches "HVAC Newport Beach" or "plumber near me," Google often shows a map and three local businesses above the blue links. Those three slots are the map pack. On DUO's Local SEO page we call that slot /01: three local businesses above the organic results, in front of people who are ready to call.
Below or around that pack you may also see Local Service Ads (pay per lead, Google Guaranteed badge) and paid search. Those are different products. The map pack is organic local presence. Mixing them up is how owners buy the wrong thing and still wonder why the board is empty.
What actually gets a contractor into the map pack?
Google is not ranking your homepage essay. For local pack visibility it leans on signals tied to the business profile and the real-world business behind it. In practice, the work that moves contractors looks like this:
- A Google Business Profile that gets worked. Categories and services that match how people search, service areas that match where you actually take jobs, photos, posts, FAQs, and hours that stay current. A profile nobody touched in a year is a common failure mode, and we say so on the Local SEO page.
- Reviews that keep coming, with replies. Volume, recency, and response matter. A competitor with hundreds of recent reviews starts ahead before anyone spends a dollar on ads.
- Citations and NAP consistency. Name, address, and phone matching across directories. Wrong listings dilute the profile.
- On-site and off-site relevance. The site should support the same cities and services the profile claims. It does not have to be a brand-new site every time, but a dead or misleading site can cap how far the pack will go.
- Calls and jobs you can see. Ranking without call tracking is a vanity report. The point of Local DUO is every call traced to the job it became.
That is management over months, not a one-time "setup." The Kingdom Heating and Air case study is the clearest published example on goduo.co: five months of profile work, directory cleanup, review replies, FAQs, and monthly reporting on a fixed map grid, not a setup and a PDF.
How long does local SEO take for a contractor?
DUO's published answer on /local-seo/ is straight: movement in the first two months, real compounding after three. Local SEO is the slowest thing we sell and the cheapest lead we can get you when it works. Anyone promising thirty days is guessing with your money.
Kingdom's published grid ran March 4 to August 2, 2026 across 169 points and ten HVAC terms in the Kansas City metro. Average map position moved from 12.2 to 3.8. Top-three coverage moved from 1.8% to 57%. Maps views rose 212% over the past twelve months on that study. Quotable lead rates on that engagement: 31% on Local Service Ads and 62% on the Google Business Profile. Those numbers live on the Kingdom case study. They are not a promise for Orange County or for your trade. They are what a worked profile looked like on a comparable grid.
What does not get you into the map pack?
A monthly blog nobody reads. Rankings for terms your market never searches. A report that never names a call or a booked job. Twelve-month contracts that buy "building authority" while the profile sits stale. We list those burns on the Local SEO page because owners keep paying for them.
Paid ads can fill the board while local compounds. They are not a substitute for the pack, and the pack is not a substitute for ads when you need jobs next week. If you need both, say so on the strategy call instead of forcing one channel to do the other's job.
How should an Orange County contractor judge a local SEO company?
DUO Digital is based in Costa Mesa, so Orange County searches are home turf for us. The most detailed map-pack proof we publish today is Kingdom Heating and Air in the Kansas City metro. Whoever you talk to, local or not, the questions are the same.
Ask any SEO company, including us:
- Show me the same map grid before and after, not one lucky pin.
- Show me calls off the profile and which ones became booked jobs.
- Tell me what you do every week to the Google Business Profile.
- Say whether Local Service Ads are included or billed twice.
- Confirm month-to-month terms and that the profile and data stay in my name.
If they cannot answer those, you are buying rankings theater. If you already have an SEO company, bring their last three reports. If they can tell you which jobs their work produced, keep them. That is the bar we put on our own Local SEO FAQ.
Where Local DUO fits
Local SEO at DUO is Google Business Profile, reviews, and local search managed until you are the first call, with every call tracked to the job it became. LSA management is included in the SEO bundles and in the Google paid ads package so you never pay for it twice. Month to month. Your profile, your reviews, your data.
If you want the phone to ring from the map, start with the profile and the proof. Book a call when you are ready to look at your grid, your reviews, and your call log in the same conversation.
FAQ
What is the Google map pack for contractors?
The three local business listings that show above the regular results when someone searches a service plus a city or near me. For HVAC, plumbing, roofing, and other trades, that pack is where a lot of the phone calls start.
How long does local SEO take for a contractor?
On DUO's Local SEO page we say movement in the first two months and real compounding after three. Anyone promising the map pack in thirty days is guessing with your money. Local SEO is the slowest channel we sell and usually the cheapest lead when it works.
Do I need a new website to rank in the map pack?
Not always. A lot of the work lives on Google's side: the Business Profile, reviews, categories, photos, and Local Service Ads. Sometimes the site only needs a tune-up. Sometimes it needs a rebuild. That call should come from an audit, not a default pitch.
What proof should I ask a local SEO company for?
A before and after on the same map grid, not a screenshot of one lucky pin. Ask which calls came from the profile, which were quotable, and which became booked jobs. If they only talk about rankings, keep shopping.
